Bathroom Sink Refinishing -- Yes, You Can Do It Yourself!
If your bathroom sink needs refinishing, you may be tempted to call in the professionals. Hiring a professional contractor to perform bathroom sink refinishing is certainly one viable option, but for the more adventurous handymen and women out there, why not do the job yourself? It's really not as hard as you might think.
The first thing to attend to is safety. Before attempting any sort of bathroom sink refinishing, make sure you have eye protection, gloves, a respirator mask, and plenty of fresh air provided by open windows.
You'll need chemical cleaners designed for the bathroom sink. Give your sink a thorough cleaning before attempting any sort of refinishing, and allow it to dry. A good cleaning, followed by a thorough rinsing, can remove dirt and grime and prepare your sink for the refinishing process.
Next, use a palm sander to rough up the surface of your sink. This will allow paint to bond to the surface of your sink and provide a smooth working surface. After sanding with a vibrating palm sander, remove all dust and grit, then tape off the areas you don't want paint to reach.
Before painting, you'll need to apply a bonding agent to the surface of your sink. This adhesive can be applied with a spray bottle or cheesecloth. Allow a few minutes for the adhesive to dry before moving on.
For painting, you'll need a spray gun and paint specially designed for surfaces such as the bathroom sink. The best option is an EP-Acrylic, which provides a durable, beautiful coating. Use a primer before applying paint, and allow the primer to dry thoroughly. When priming and painting, use a smooth back and forth motion with your spray gun. You'll want to apply two coats of primer and three coats of paint. If you choose the right kind of paint for your bathroom sink refinishing, you won't even need a separate finishing product.
And that's all there is to it! Anyone can refinish their bathroom sink in a day or two with the right materials, used in the correct manner.
