Refinishing Plastic Chairs -- An Easy DIY Project!
If you've got plastic chairs, then you may find that they become worn and unattractive after years of wear. Although replacing them is one option, you may choose to refinish them instead. Luckily, refinishing plastic chairs is a simple process that anyone can do on their own.
The first step is to prepare the plastic chair for paint. This is accomplished by scuff sanding the plastic and giving the paint a surface it can cling to. Use a coarse grit sandpaper and thourougly scuff the entire chair. Pay no attention to scratches and scuffs -- they'll be covered later!
Next, use your garden hose and rinse all sand and grit off of your chairs. You'll want to allow them time to dry thoroughly before moving on.
Any holes in the plastic can be filled with a putty. Simply apply the putty to the dents or holes, allow to try, then sand until smooth. Next, it's time to prime! Use a primer especially created for plastic and apply two coats, allowing each coat to dry before moving on to the next one.
Once your primer has dried, you can start thinking about painting. A spray paint is probably the most effective choice when it comes to refinishing plastic chairs. However, any old spray paint just won't do. You'll need to choose a paint that's specially made for plastic. Cover your lawn with newspaper or a tarp, and place your chairs on top. Cover the chairs with a thin, even coat of paint. You'll want to apply three coats, allowing each one to dry in between. After painting, it's time to protect your chairs with a weatherproof finish. Try an oil based polyurethane for maximum protection, and apply up to three coats.
Refinishing plastic chairs can improve the look of your entire landscape! Try painting your chairs in vibrant colors that reflect the colors of flowers in your garden. Move away from traditional black and white by choosing vibrant shades of red, yellow and green.
You'll be surprised in the difference in your chairs when you're done, and because this is such an easy process, it can be done in one day! So what are you waiting for -- give those old plastic chairs new life with a good plastic chair refinishing job!
