Shuffleboard Refinishing -- Give Your Game New Life!
If you own a shuffleboard table, did you know that you can refinish it yourself? Years of wear and aging can turn even the highest quality shuffleboard table into an eyesore that just isn't as nice as it used to be. Although there are professional companies you can use to do the work for you, shuffleboard refinishing can be a great do-it-yourself project.
The first step? Filling those scratches, dents and dings! This is accomplished by applying a wood putty to the offending areas. One good choice is Durham's Water Putty. Allow the putty to dry, then move on to the next step -- sanding.
Use a 220-grit sandpaper and take your time, sanding the whole table in the direction of the wood grain. Be sure to sand thoroughly, because a good sanding job really does make all the difference in the finished product. After sanding, vacuum away all grit and sand.
At this point, take a close look at your table. You will want to refill any remaining dents and scratches, then resand. After your table is smoothly sanded and all notches are filled in with putty, it's time for the next step -- clear shellac.
One good clear shellac for any shuffleboard table is Zissner Clear Shellac #4. You'll want to apply one coat and allow it to dry thoroughly. Next, you'll want to apply a clear gloss, such as Min-Wax's High Gloss clear urethane. This product costs around $30 a gallon and is easily available in any home improvement store.
After applying the urethane and letting it dry, sand once more with 220 grit sandpaper. After removing all sand and grit, apply another coat of urethane in long, smooth strokes down the length of the table using a foam brush.
And that's it! I'd recommend that you allow a few days for the coating to dry and set before using your table again. As you'll see, shuffleboard refinishing will turn your tired old table into one that looks and performs as good as new!
